~ Purpose ~

The International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL 73/78) is a key international maritime convention developed under the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to prevent and minimize pollution of the marine environment from ships. It addresses various sources of ship-generated pollution, including oil, noxious liquid substances, sewage, garbage, and air emissions. Proper onboard waste management and compliance with MARPOL requirements are essential to protecting marine ecosystems, preventing pollution, and ensuring that ships operate in accordance with applicable international regulations.

~ Objectives ~

Participants will gain an understanding of the key MARPOL requirements and develop the knowledge needed to manage ship-generated waste responsibly and prevent marine pollution. The course covers waste segregation, storage, handling, and disposal procedures, the use of relevant onboard pollution prevention equipment, and the implementation of appropriate operational practices. Participants will also learn about pollution prevention responsibilities, applicable documentation and record-keeping requirements, and the importance of complying with established procedures and regulations. Particular emphasis is placed on environmental awareness, correct waste management practices, and preventing accidental or unlawful discharges into the marine environment.
