~ Purpose ~

Increasing maritime traffic, growing vessel sizes, and navigation through narrow or restricted waterways contribute to the complexity of maritime operations and increase the risk of human error, which is a significant contributing factor in many maritime accidents and incidents. Navigation is a dynamic process influenced by numerous factors, requiring continuous situational awareness, sound judgment, and effective decision-making. Consequently, maintaining safety at sea requires a high level of competence, vigilance, and strict adherence to established procedures.

~ Objectives ~

Participants in this course will develop a better understanding of watchkeeping duties, the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs), and their practical application to ensure safe navigation. The course emphasizes the importance of maintaining an effective navigational watch, recognizing potential hazards, and taking timely and appropriate action to prevent collisions and other incidents. Delayed decisions, improper commands, or failure to comply with applicable regulations can have serious consequences for the vessel, its crew, and the marine environment.
